History part 1, the 80s.

This is about music, all of it. Everything I remember listening to, from as far back as I can remember to now and beyond. Just to give a background of where I am and where I’m coming from.

The first record I remember buying was Piledriver by Status Quo. PiledriverIt was 1984 and I was 10. A track that stood out from this album for me was their cover of Roadhouse Blues by The Doors.

I’m not ashamed that this was my first record but I have to admit I haven’t listened to Quo since maybe 1986, after the release of Quo’s In the Army I lost interest. 12 years old and already judging musical directions!

I also think this was the start of my personal musical rebellion against my father who is also a music fanatic. His weakness is jazz and I wanted no part of it. I mean, How cool is it to like the same music as your Dad when you’re a kid?

My family moved from Cork to Dublin when I was 10. I had a strong Cork accent and that was kind of traumatic for me. I became a bit of a loner. I didn’t say much. Enter The Cure.Three Imaginary Boys.Three Imaginary BoysThe highlight of my Cure period was being on the set for the the video recording of Why Can’t I be You?. My Cure faze lasted a couple of years and was in direct conflict with my next love for heavy metal. There was an open war between metal fans and cure heads in the late 80s early 90s. I even remember a gang called the ACM (Anti Cure Movement) or something like that. 1988 I got the chance to see Monsters of Rock wih, Iron Maiden, KISS, David Lee Roth, Megadeth, Guns N’ Roses and Helloween. I also got the chance to see Metallica. The rest of the 80s were spent getting hold of vinyl records of thrash and death metal. I also started learning how to play drums.
